RF-SMART for AX 2012

Happy New Year! As many are settling into 2012, RF-SMART has been very busy! Summit Success!

Our blog has been quiet recently due to the abundance of marketing activities surrounding our participation in AXUG Summit 2011, November 7th – 11th! Now that the hard work is over we can relish in our great success…

AXUG Summit this year was a super successful show with a surprising amount of booth traffic and a plethora of in booth demos – hopefully you got the chance to see RF-SMART for AX2012 in action. We participated this year in four sessions, two AXUG educational sessions and two partner showcases. With the record attendance we had in all of those sessions be on the look-out for encores of each in the New Year.

Along with our booth success we had a rocking party at the Jupiter Pool @ Caesars Palace where the “Rat Pack” performed. If you were among the many revelers enjoying the melodies of Sammy, Frank & Dean click here to see your face in the crowd.

I know that many of you will be sad that this our last AX Customer Review series video. We worked long and hard on making great videos and judging by the many comments we received, they undoubtedly were received well! In the process of creating these videos I learned a few things along the way – one of them being that the boundaries between customer and vendor are blurred by our similarities. We have the same goals in common which goes back to my post on October 7, 2011. RF-SMART Customer Day – Australia!

This summer, RF-SMART put together Global Customer Days for both our AX & JD Edwards Customers. We had great success with our JD Edwards Customer Day in Denver, our AX Customer Days in Jacksonville, Australia & Belgium! If you are reading this blog then you have been watching and reading some of the great footage that came out of our AX Customer Days and coming in the fall you will be able to view the JD Edwards Customer Day feedback and videos.

Most recently our team went to Melbourne, Australia to hear how our customers in AU and New Zealand feel about the RF-SMART product and how it can be improved. We were very excited to share and receive information from our customers! Most of our customers needed to be reminded about the expansive functionality that RF-SMART has to offer and were really impressed that we cared about how they feel about the product! While abroad, our team got the chance to visit with over 7 RF-SMART customers (check out some photos below)

RF-SMART has taken to the written word to promote our new Customer Review Series.  We had our first ever Customer Advisory Board May 11-13, 2011 where we had a meeting of the minds with our AX customers to help us better understand what they think of our product and how we can continue to build products that they and our markets are excited to buy.  During these sessions each participated in an interview on the value of RF-SMART.  We are excited to introduce Jeremy Chupp, IT Manager with Ohio Gratings, Inc. speaking about the success they have achieved with RF-SMART! Case Study

Ohio Gratings, Inc. (OGI) was established in 1970 as a bar grading manufacturer. Their work to perfect this one product established OGI as a market leader in the aluminum and steel bar grating market. OGI now manufactures light duty steel bar grating, heavy duty welded steel and stainless steel grating, aluminum swaged, dovetail, aluminum plank and fiberglass bar grating. OGI also provides design and custom fabrication services to their customers worldwide. Ohio Gratings operates from their 312,000 square foot manufacturing and fabrication facility in Canton, OH, and four additional fabrication locations nationwide. Since their establishment, Ohio Gratings has operated under one motto “Make it right and ship when promised.”

Along with product and customer expansion came the challenge to maintain accuracy and speed within the manufacturing and distribution process. In order to “make it right”, Ohio Gratings needed visibility into the availability of their products. In addition, OGI also needed to digitize their purchase order receiving to decrease manual errors and time spent.

In order to “ship when promised” the benefit of gaining visibility was recognized once again. OGI has three different warehouses at their main branch in Ohio, each housing numerous materials. According to the IT Manager at OGI, Jeremy Chupp, “a few times a week employees would end up spending 2 to 3 hours, trying to locate materials for customer orders.”

In an effort to address these issues, Ohio Gratings went live with Microsoft Dynamics AX and RF-SMART simultaneously in May of 2009. The main goal of this implementation was to gain inventory visibility, and RF-SMART was the obvious choice for OGI. RF-SMART had been recommended by an AX partner, and Ohio Gratings’ General Manager was already a believer in what RF-SMART could do from an inventory standpoint. These implementations proved to be the right step for Ohio Gratings.

By leveraging AX and RF-SMART functionality, Ohio Gratings improved upon their motto to “make it right and ship when promised.” RF-SMART addressed Ohio Gratings’ needs for inventory visibility with the inventory cycle counting and inventory transfers functionality. With greater product traceability, OGI can be confident in product availability, and employees are no longer wasting hours looking for materials. Through RF-SMART, OGI was also able to digitize purchase order receiving, cutting down on errors from manual entry. These functions have improved both accuracy and speed within OGI’s processes.

OGI also found that RF-SMART could save them additional time through cycle counting and tag counting. In fact, the time spent on inventory counts was cut in half, without compromising data integrity. Their investment evaluation for tag counting showed that just four physical counts gave OGI a full return on their RF-SMART investment.

Other unexpected benefits were experienced even before implementation. “We would not have survived our AX go-live without RF-SMART,” said Jeremy. RF-SMART’s support team asked pertinent questions, spent time learning the company, and identified areas to improve on overall workflow. Additionally, OGI estimated that RF-SMART saved them approximately 55 man hours during their go-live month. This amount was figured by comparing the time to complete the RF Inventory Transfer transaction to the time it would take to manually record and enter the transactions into AX. Today, OGI averages 293 RF Inventory Transfer transactions per day; this equates to a total savings of 195 man hours on a monthly basis.

As Ohio Gratings is new to the Dynamics AX community, they continue to roll out and expand AX + RF-SMART functionality and are glad to have RF-SMART as a resource while moving forward. Ohio Grating’s is now working to implement sales order picking and production reporting with RF-SMART and AX. Due to the success in Canton, OGI hopes to one day bring AX and RF-SMART to their fabrication facilities across the United States. In regards to their overall experience, Jeremy said, “I’ve been extremely satisfied with the entire package, from the software to getting to work with the RF-SMART team. I have and will continue to recommend RF-SMART to other companies.”
